Wes Anderson’s The Matrix Embellishes Simulated Reality In Peculiar Trailer

The Matrix has been reimagined as a pastel-drenched Wes Anderson film. The film, which was directed by the Wachowskis, follows Neo (Keanu Reeves), a hacker who discovers that the world he lives in is a simulation created by machines in a future dystopia where humans are used as batteries. It premiered in theaters in March 1999 and grossed over $450 million worldwide, becoming the fifth highest-grossing film of the year in the U.S.

YouTube account Lucas x Hayley has used generative AI programs ChatGPT and Midjourney to reimagine how The Matrix cast and overall aesthetic would look different if the film had been directed by Wes Anderson.

The new film, titled The Grand Simulation: A Matrix Story, fully utilizes Anderson’s symmetrical and color-drenched aesthetic. The newly reimagined cast of the film also includes Adam Driver as Neo, Greta Gerwig as Trinity, Jeffrey Wright as Morpheus, and Ben Stiller as Cypher.

Will Anybody Other Than a Wachowski Ever Direct a Matrix Film?

Neo and the ending of The Matrix 1999

So far, all four live-action Matrix films have been directed by one of the Wachowskis. Lana and Lilly collaborated on all three entries in the original trilogy, following The Matrix with 2003’s The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. The series then went dormant until 2021’s The Matrix Resurrections which was directed by Lana on her own.

So far the sisters have been the sole stewards of the ongoing Matrix story. Although they weren’t involved in directing the animated anthology spinoff film The Animatrix, they were present as producers and writers on the project. This has prevented any other director – even one as unique as Wes Anderson – from having influence over the aesthetic and storytelling of the Matrix franchise in the decades since it first premiered.

The Matrix series seems to have gone dormant again after The Matrix Resurrections flopped, but it seems more than likely that one or both of the Wachowskis would return should another entry be put into production. However, eventually a new director will probably helm a Matrix film, likely if it ever gets a reboot. While Wes Anderson likely wouldn’t be the right fit for an action-packed epic like The Matrix, it’s entirely possible that someone with an equally distinct visual sense could eventually take the reins.
