FUBAR’s Mole Twist Sets Up A Darker Season 2

[ad_1]

Warning: Major Spoilers Ahead For FUBAR Season 1!FUBAR’s first season is high on goofy comedy, but its shock mole twist could set up a darker second season. Previews for Netflix’s FUBAR play up the presence of action icon Arnold Schwarzenegger and the setpieces, but it’s really more of a comedy than an action series. The True Lies-inspired premise has Arnie’s CIA agent character Luke Brunner learn his daughter Emma (Monica Barbaro) is also a spy. While FUBAR leans into the drama of a father and daughter connecting to connect, it features plenty of comic relief too.

Arnold gets to deliver some of his famous bad puns, and the show even features a strange homage to his love scene from Twins. Most of the comedy comes from Luke and Emma’s CIA support team, made up of Milan Carter, Fortune Feimster and Travis Van Winkle’s characters. Unfortunately, the comedy can often drain the tension out of what should have been more intense sequences. If FUBAR season 2 goes ahead, a key twist from the finale could make the next season a little more dramatic.

Tina Is FUBAR’s Russian Mole

The sixth episode of FUBAR “Royally Flushed” had previously hinted that Russia had a mole in the CIA, and the finale confirmed it was none other than Tina (Aparna Brielle). Tina is an analyst who joins the team on loan from the NSA and soon becomes a key member. She also started a romantic relationship with Milan Carter’s Barry, who is afraid his unabashed nerdiness will scare her off. Instead, this only seemed to bond them closer, but the final scenes of FUBAR see Tina receive a call, which confirms she’s the Russian mole inside the agency.

FUBAR Needs To Get Darker For Season 2

FUBAR season 1 ends on a suitably dramatic note; Gabriel Luna’s Boro crashes the wedding of Luke’s ex-wife Tally (Fabiana Udenio), leading to a huge shootout. Luke and Emma crowd the family into a van and speed away in the aftermath, only to learn that Boro has made their true identities known to their enemies. This means both they and their families need to go into hiding ASAP. This is a great hook for a potential FUBAR season 2, and the fact Tina’s CIA cover is still in place suggests the show could go to some darker places.

The first season of FUBAR examined the toll being a spy can take, including the constant lying. FUBAR season 2 will find Luke and Emma being confronted by their loved ones over not only their constant deception, but also how their actions have essentially destroyed their lives now they’re on the run. Having Tina be a secret spy only puts them in more danger, and while it’s doubtful FUBAR would drop the comedy totally – and nor should it – it would be nice if the stakes were played a little straighter next time around.
