Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is one of the most highly-anticipated titles coming to the PlayStation 5, and as such, its release date has been the topic of much speculation. In an age where game delays are common, Insomniac has been wise not to be too specific with the release date for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, with broad release windows allowing enough time to work on the titles without disappointing fans by promising launch dates that can’t be met.
When Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was first revealed in the September 2021 PlayStation Showcase, it had a vague 2023 release window. This was narrowed down in December 2022, however, when PlayStation and Insomniac confirmed that the superhero title would be released in Fall 2023. Since then, the developer has stuck to this release window in its press, but many fans were hopeful that the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase – where Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 had already been heavily rumored to make an appearance – would provide a definitive release date for the title.
The PlayStation Showcase Didn’t Narrow Down Spider-Man 2’s Release Date
Unfortunately, while the PlayStation Showcase delivered massively on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 footage, with almost 15 minutes dedicated to introducing Insomniac’s take on characters such as Kraven the Hunter, and showing Miles and a symbiote-enhanced Peter’s new gameplay abilities, it didn’t provide a specific release date. The footage has significantly increased excitement, however, and many took to social media to speculate exactly when in Fall 2023 the title will release.
Traditionally, Insomniac’s Spider-Man titles have been released somewhere in the Fall of their respective years. 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man came out in September, and its follow-up Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales was released to coincide with the PlayStation 5’s launch in November 2020.
Venom Actor Tony Todd Previously Hinted At A September Release
Tony Todd, who plays the fan-favorite Spider-Man villain, Venom, in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 may have potentially leaked the game’s release date back in March 2023. His now-deleted tweet stated that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will launch in September, with a marketing push to lead up to it in August. Todd has been extremely vocal about his excitement about playing Venom in the upcoming game and has done several interviews discussing his experience. Insomniac has yet to confirm this window, but the tweet being deleted is the biggest indicator that the actor may have prematurely announced something he shouldn’t have.
If Todd’s comments turn out to be true, then history will repeat itself with a September release of a Marvel’s Spider-Man game, and will please fans who are eager to get their hands on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 as soon as possible. With the first Marvel’s Spider-Man launching at the start of its Fall window, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales‘ November release coming at the end of the season, it’s possible that the upcoming sequel could target a slot in the middle and release in October 2023 instead.
If there is a marketing push beginning in August as speculated, it feels like it may be too close to a September release date to generate much buzz. It’s possible that this marketing push may have been brought forward, starting with the PlayStation Showcase instead, which will make September a more likely release month. Until Insomniac or Sony confirms it, however, fans can look forward to the fact that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is still targeting a release date this year.
